Are you a creative? A lot of the people I know don’t believe they are creative. They live lives of family and work and faith. They don’t see all the things they do that are filled with creativity. I believe we every day live creative lives just to survive from day to day and this month’s book review looks at the creative life.

Two years ago, I read a book that spoke to the deepest part of myself. That I believe speaks to the core of all of us. Elizabeth Gilbert’s, Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear,  is a book to re ignite the creative spark that we all have , although for some it might reside deep inside.

Elizabeth takes us on a journey deep inside. It gives us a road map to navigate the journey. A creative life for Elizabeth is not only one of an artist. It is a way of looking at all our lives, mothers, spouses, scientists, accountants, students, healthcare providers,  as being creative.

Big Magic is the first book I read that looked honestly at the doubts and fears we all have in our creative pursuits.

The Big Magic looks at Elizabeth’s brilliant idea that “ideas” are living. They come to us and ask us to partner with them. To join with them to bring to birth something in this world. As an artist this rings so true. Ideas have pulses and energy when they come to you. As humans we have the choice to listen or not. To say yes or to ignore or even to say no.

Elizabeth Gilberts Facebook post on her letter to fear

What Elizabeth suggests is to say yes. Take the journey. Put the work in. Tell fear that it can come along for the ride but it can not drive. Elizabeth believes that fear is an essential part in the creative process. Elizabeth suggests we have an open conversation with our fear. Fear should never be the driving force when deciding to follow a creative life.

I highly recommend reading  Big Magic and bring the magic of a creative life to your daily life. There are many great books to help your creative urgings. Below are some of the great ones.
